Over many years we have developed our own range of giant pumpkin seeds by selecting and cross breeding only the best looking giant pumpkins (rather than heaviest) to try and get massive round and orange pumpkins.
Competitive giant pumpkins are grown for weight alone where the shape and colour doesn’t really matter so they tend to be white/yellow and flat and, whilst very impressive, they can be ‘photogenically challenged’. We are striving for seed to grow big, round and orange pumpkins that are perfect for Halloween carving or displays.
Our ‘Big Orange’ pumpkin seed is available to buy from www.giantvegetableseed.co.uk along with competitive grade ‘heaviest pumpkin’ seed selected by Giant Veg guru Clive Bevan.
You might grow a ‘big un’ with the right seed but you definitely wont grow a ‘big un’ with the wrong seed is a good adage and giant pumpkin growing tips can be found all over the internet. There are really no hard and fast rules so you can experiment if you like but a good guide to read before you start can be found at merebrow.com/home/mbgp/how_to_grow.html
My top tip would be “soil compaction really is your enemy!” I think this can make as big a difference to the outcome as water and feed does.
